White Charcoal – Everything you need to know?

What is white charcoal used for?

White charcoal, also known as Shiro-zumi or Binchotan, is a traditional material widely used, especially in Japan and Korea. White charcoal is highly applicable, thanks to its superior features compared to conventional charcoal. In industry, white coal has been interested in using high density coal and low volatile replace coke and coal in the manufacture of aluminium and steel due to its potential to reduce net greenhouse gas emissions from the production process.

Besides, white charcoal is also used in food processing, as a smoke-free fuel. In another hand, products made from white charcoals which are including water filters, shampoos and conditioners, face masks are also applied, especially in Japan. Some other applications of White charcoal include its use in radio frequency shielding as an electromagnetic wave absorber, and as a bathroom deodorizer, which suggests that white charcoal has a range of novel properties. Therefore, White Charcoal is expected to be a potential candidate in the future.

How to make white charcoal?

Binchotan or White charcoal is synthesized by hydrolysis of hardwoods, such as oak wood, coffee trees, eucalyptus trees … at low temperatures (∼200 – 400oC) in 120 hours, then increase temperature ∼ 1000 degrees. In the end of carbonization process, White hot charcoal is removed from the kiln and poured into a mixture of earth, sand and ash moistened. The term white charcoal arises from the use of ash to cool the material, which give a pale grey coal surface.

What is size of White charcoal?

After taking out from the kiln and cooling. White charcoal is cut off and packed carefully before handing over to customers. Type of White charcoal for retailing is usually packed into plastic wrapped paper bags of 1kg, 3kg, 5kg, 10kg. White charcoal for exporting in Viet Binchotan Company is strictly inspected not only for size but also for quality. Depending on the market, our company classifies the size according to the order. The sizes below is sample for the Japanese and Korean markets.

Chemical and physical characteristics of White Charcoal – Binchotan

How many people can know about the structure of this type of coal, which is essential before white charcoal widely used in metallurgy and mining. Nuclear magnetic resonance analysis and X-ray photo-electron spectroscopy showed the chemical properties of high-carbon of Binchotan white charcoal. The ingredients of the remaining substances are listed in the table below:
